Frequently Asked Questions

Vysti Build gives you the curriculum — our descriptors, Lexicon, Performances, Key-Question answers, and assignments. Here's how that works, and where the actual texts come from.

Where do I get the actual texts?

Vysti provides the curriculum — our analysis, vocabulary, questions, and assignments — not the literary texts themselves.

For the texts: readings marked Public Domain are free — use the “Find online ↗” button to locate them at Project Gutenberg, Open Library, or Standard Ebooks. Readings marked In Copyright should be obtained through purchase (the Buy link) or your school or public library.

For the short poems and excerpts in Further Exploration, we include our own curated versions, and offer a download where the work is in the public domain.

Why can't I download the novels?

A book can be in the public domain while a particular edition of it is not. The full works we hold are modern publisher editions — their introductions, notes, and typesetting are copyrighted even when the underlying work is free.

So rather than share an edition we don't have the right to distribute, each Primary Focus reading shows our descriptor, a copyright badge, a “Find online” search button, and a Buy option where applicable — pointing you to a clean, legal copy.

What do the “Public Domain” and “In Copyright” badges mean?

Public Domain means the work is free to read and share — you can usually find a free copy online via “Find online.”

In Copyright means the work is still protected; obtain it via the Buy link or a library.

Status is computed automatically from publication and author dates and rolls forward every January 1 (under the US 95-year rule), so the set of free works grows over time with no action from you.

What is an Event, and what is a Class Plan?

An Event is a ready-made teaching unit (e.g. Myth and Classical Archetypes). Open one and you'll see its materials grouped into sections: Primary Focus readings, Further Exploration, Lexis, Key Questions, Performances, Extensions, and Continual Goals.

Tick the materials you want and they collect into a Class Plan. Use Export plan to preview it as a clean, printable guide you can save as a PDF.

What are Performances, Key Questions, and the Lexicon?

Performances are rich, open-ended assignments — each offers a menu of concrete deliverables (“feats”) students can choose from.

Key Questions are discussion prompts, each with a canonical answer for the teacher.

The Lexicon (Lexis) is our vocabulary catalog — scholarly definitions, etymology, and application — that ties to each Event's readings.

Can I author my own Event?

Not yet — Events are currently pre-made by Vysti. Teacher-authored Events (build your own from readings, lexis, questions, and assignments) are on the roadmap and will use this same model.

How current is the copyright information?

It's computed from each work's publication and author dates and updates automatically each year. It is US-based; rules differ in other countries. This is provided as guidance to help you find texts, and is not legal advice.
